Classification of Composites
There are several ways to classify composite materials, and one way is to categorize them based on their constituents: the type of matrix material, and the type of reinforcement.
Based on the type of matrix material, composite materials can be categorized as:
•
Polymer matrix composites (PMC)
•
Metal matrix composites (MMC)
•
Ceramic matrix composites (CMC)
•
Cement matrix composites (CeMC)
Based on the reinforcement shape, composite materials can also be categorized as:
•
Continuous fibers
•
Random short fibers
•
Flakes
•
Whiskers
•
Particulate
A commonly used type of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) is polymer matrix composites (PMC), in which continuous fibers are used as reinforcement.
